The weather broke for us, but given our umpires, that was a given. The pitch however, resembled something best graced by Torvill & Dean, with triple salchows a plenty, not to mention the odd two footed tackle from our own Chris.
First game after a 5 week break, what did you expect, rubber biscuit? The team did well, very well, they focused on the simple things, got themselves back to basics, little bit of politics, worked together and eventually, triumphed.
Let’s talk goals, Coles in ours was imperious and shock, in the months since I last saw him, has grown in stature and height too. It’s always daunting when someone you worked with a colt now looks down on you, not only as a player.
Our goal, Steely strode forward, struck a Rudduckesque thunder strike into the D, where a defender kindly flipped the ball in the air, for wafer thin touch Billane to sneak in again and waft another goal home. Let’s be clear here, Peter scored this, not Connor, Billane, P. Given how close the names are I can understand why selection may have been confused in the past.
Could we have played better? Yes, I am totally certain that maybe we could, but that’s like saying could Michael Phelps swim faster.
Special mentions I hear you read, well, to be honest, modesty prevents details, so as usual, I’m just picking names at random. Great to see Wotherds back playing, the Welsh dragons did a fantastic job up front, PoM Billane led the line, Ralph Parker was in maximum “wreck it” mode. But the defence were the real stars, they saved our bacon, spared our blushes, covered over our cracks and generally made us look half decent.
In fact, so dominant were the defence that they took to dribbling, backwards, towards our goal, a long way towards our goal. Oh we laughed and laughed and laughed. Let’s do that again. Please.
The thanks are like an Oscar ceremony this week and no, that doesn’t mean I am going to fake slap the presenter, we had clan Coles, clan Herridge, Sue, Ruby and Ralph, if I have missed anyone apologies, but my fingers are getting tired from all the typing.
Special and genuine thanks to umpires Mike Course and Dave Ovenall, we would have no game without umpires anyway, but when we have two that have such excellent games as they did today, it makes the game a total pleasure.
