It was to be an exciting start to the season as we were to play on the Olympic pitch- on the surf turf. Emma and Lida even washed their hair that morning in preparation for the event.
From the start it was evident that the pitch would be an issue as it was so bouncy and carpet like. This was something we were not used to and would take some time to figure out. The warm up was interrupted by a sudden unwanted pitch watering that we were unprepared for! Despite all of this the Ash girls still stood set for a battle - GAME ON.
It was clear from the start that this opening fixture was going to be hard work. Ash defended well from the front against a strengthened Wapping side who were well organised and had excellent ball speed. The Ash girls continued to press and were double teaming all over the place. Lisa GK made some spectacular saves, giving an Olympic standard performance and keeping the girls in it.
Ash created a few chances with continuous perseverance from Spider, Rae and Price in the middle of the park. The work rate of the team and in particular the forward line was admirable and the summer fitness work was evident. An excellent shave tackle from Emma Stephens was a first half highlight and something we will all hear about for a long time.
Wapping showed their strength and managed to scrape two goals to give them three points. Although Ash have started with a loss there were so many positives to take from the game. The girls look like a force to be reckoned with this season.
Person of the game: Lisa GK for the awesome saves she made over and over again!
