Young Leaders Programme & DofE 1 of 2

1. Young Leaders Programme

What is it?

The Young Leaders Programme is designed to equip young people with a wide range of valuable skills, including leadership, communication, teamwork, and decision-making, by offering hands-on experience in coaching our youngest club members, umpiring training matches, and managing hockey teams. Participants will work closely with their peers as well as our team of experienced Youth Section coaches and umpires. Through these activities, young leaders will not only gain confidence and practical expertise on the pitch but also develop new skills.

Who is it aimed at?

This is open to youth players in school years 9-12 (ages 13–17).

It can also count toward the volunteering requirement for the Duke of Edinburgh programme.

What modules are in the programme?

  • Safeguarding Guidance (Completed in Introductory evening)
  • Introduction to Leadership (Completed in Introductory evening)
  • Team Manager Role plus practical (Completed in Introductory evening)
  • In2hockey coaching plus practical
  • Umpiring plus practical(s)

How does a Young Leader join the programme?

Young Leaders can apply at the start of each season during the application window by completing the link below and stating their reason for participating (e.g., supporting GCSE Sport, DofE, building confidence, or preparing for future coaching).

When does it take place?

An introductory evening will be held at the club by the Youth Development Officer, providing an overview of the programme and covering the modules Introduction to Leadership, Safeguarding Guidance, and the role of a Team Manager. The coaching and umpiring online modules are to be completed independently at home. The full programme will be emailed to Young Leaders and parents as a guide to each module. The practical components of Team Manager, coaching, and umpiring will occur during Sunday mornings.

How long does it take to complete the programme?

Young Leaders are responsible for managing the course in relation to school commitments, family obligations, and playing for the club. While the maximum period for completing the award is two years, certain participants may choose to fulfil the requirements within a much shorter timeframe.

Do I receive a qualification?

Completing the course earns the Young Leader a certificate. Whilst not a formal qualification, it is a valuable achievement that can be listed on their record. The course provides a foundation for coaching and complements England Hockey’s formal coach education programme, available from age 16.

Is Sunday help required?

Yes. Obviously, we want the Young Leaders to represent the club in matches, but the practical modules of coaching, Team Manager, and umpiring will need to be completed and assessed on Sunday mornings. At times young leaders will also be called upon to assist at festivals, club events, and taster days.

Is there a cost?

There is no monetary cost, only time and commitment.

The Young Leaders Polo and Hoodie are available as an optional purchase.

Who runs the programme?

The Youth Development Officer will oversee the programme, Umpire Development Officer and Lead Coaches.
